Finishing wooden furniture may be the last step of the process, yet it does not mean that it is the easiest one. Especially given the simple fact that there is really no universal advice on how to finish wooden furniture. Everything will depend on the particular circumstances. It is important to define what kind of wood you are working with, want kind of furniture we are talking about, how much protection the piece needs – and, of course – what kind of look you are trying to create. Choosing a finish type

There are several finish types, and your choice will mostly depend on the protection your wood requires. Wax, for instance, should better be used in combination with other finishes, like an after-finish. Linseed oil is common for the outdoor furniture because it ensures protection from moisture. Finally, there is a variety of different lacquer finishes, including high gloss, acryl, and some other types. They give furniture a beautiful look, yet their lifespan is relatively short.

Making a sample

If you have set your mind on finishing your own furniture, it is important to stress the necessity of making a sample before you get to work. Find a piece of an identical wood material and learn to apply your finish. If you have never done this before, you might have to make at least a couple of attempts before you are satisfied with the results. Never – ever – start working on the furniture piece until you make at least a couple of samples.

Sanding between coats (if applicable)

If you are working on a smooth finish, most common for indoor wooden furniture , you might also have to learn how to sand between the finish coats. All in all, the task is relatively simple – you just have to apply sand grains and carefully smooth them into the surface. Though, the task requires a bit of skill and experience – so do not forget about the sample piece.
