Pull out any home décor magazine. It’s full of luxuriously furnished rooms with their vibrant colors, amazing textures and stunning art. Then, think about trying to squeeze that into a small apartment. It’s sort of like trying to put a size twelve woman in a pair of size six jeans. Even if you do manage to get it to fit, it just isn’t going too look good. Selecting furniture for apartment living needs to follow a different route, but still arrive at a stylish destination.
Start by using your creativity. When you furnish an apartment, make sure you are getting the most from each piece. What you want to avoid is trying to cram too much into too little space. Instead, opt for items that have two or three purposes. A kitchen cabinet that houses an over the “counter” microwave, with a drip coffee maker suspended beneath and a cabinet to hold all the items needed to use each appliance is a good piece for a small kitchen. Following that idea, why not get a bench that houses your shoes and provides you with a place to sit at the mirror? It can stretch both bedroom and closet space.
When selecting furniture for apartment or condominium living, you want to stick to smaller or scaled-down items that fit your rooms. You might still be able to get that lavish sofa you saw in the magazine, but get the smaller size. The same goes with all of your rooms. Don’t try to wedge “big house” furniture into your “small apartment” space or you will wind up with no space for actually living.
It may take a little longer and require more effort tastefully furnish a small apartment, but you can do it. In fact, you might love y our design so much that you could submit it to a magazine. Then, other renters can model their apartment’s decor after yours.
