Dining room furniture, like any other fashion statement, has followed many trends over the years. While it was developed and designed centuries ago, primarily for simple, serving and eating, it has evolved into some of the most elaborate and expensive furnishings our homes today. Oddly, furniture styles tend to mimic other trends currently in vogue. While trestle tables gave way to gate-leg tables, gave way extension tables to seat twenty, the styles are circling back around. More and more, the rustic look of our ancestor’s dining room is finding its way back into our eating areas.
Small trestle tables with wide planked wooden tops and benches as opposed to chairs are popular in many “country kitchen” collections. While they are often the only dining room furniture in the home, often these are located at least partially in or very near, the kitchen. These tables are great places to congregate for food and offer a little extra “work space” in a small kitchen area, too.
Gate-leg or “drop leaf” tables can be small or a bit bigger if needed. Lovingly reproduced to resemble vintage pieces, they are idea for a dining space in apartments or very small homes furniture . These are just a couple of the styles of dining room furniture that have gone out of favor once only to find themselves back in style, once more.
Deciding what sort of table and chairs, china cabinets, buffets and other pieces of furniture are “right” for your dining room must be dictated by the space you have and the needs of your family. Still, it’s nice to know that, even when your dream house doesn’t have a formal dining room large enough to hold twenty people, you can still have a stylish dining room where you, your family and your guests will feel welcome.
