After Buying A House Checklist: Which Are The First Things To Do?

After buying a house, checklist of minor chores is practically limitless. You have to make sure every little detail is in place before you actually start packing your things. For different people, the particulars will surely differ. Yet, there are some common tips that can help you get started – no matter what kind of house you bought or how soon you are planning to move in – those are some universal guidelines any homeowner can benefit from. So, after buying a house checklist should first of all include:

After Buying A House Checklist: Which Are The First Things To Do?

Change locks and get new keys

To make the new property truly yours, you will have to install new lock and get yourself a brand new set of keys. This is not merely a symbolic gesture – after all, you cannon know for sure who can have the old set of keys, so new locks are more of a security measure.

Double check your house for leakages and pests

Even though you have probably made you first check before buying the house, make another one just to be on the safe side. A lot of smaller things can skip your attention at the first glance.

Order all missing furniture and equipment

Usually, houses are sold without any furniture in them. And, if you have never owned property before, it is unlikely that you have all (or any) furniture you need. So, get ready to hit the stores . Surely, equipping your entire house with a set of new furniture can be quite pricy. If you feel that you cannot afford buying everything at once, think of the rooms you will be using the most. Bathroom will probably have all the essentials, so you will have to take care of the bedroom  and the kitchen first.

Speaking of kitchen, make sure that you have all the equipment you need – or that you have the essentials. Bigger items, like fridge and dishwasher are usually hard to forget about; so, try not remembering about the smaller ones  – plates, cups, and so on.

Clean before you move in

Cleaning an empty house is so much easier, so make sure to get rid of the dust and mess before you start moving your stuff in. As far as the house is empty, nothing will hinder from accessing normally inaccessible corners – so you get a chance to polish your new home to perfection.

Get rid of the old junk

This is definitely not a strict rule, but it is a good piece of advice in general. Over the years, we tend to accumulate plenty of useless junk – but let’s agree, there is no point in dragging it into your new house.

When you are done with all of those, you can start packing. If you have plenty of things that need to be moved, carefully organize them into boxes and mark every box according to its contents (kitchenware, linen, electronics, etc.) – this way, you will be able to unpack the things you need first and leave less important items for later.  Then, the only thing that’s left is to hire the movers!
