The lowly coat stand doesn’t get the respect it deserves. It can be a stylish piece of furniture, lovingly crafted and made of fine materials. No one notices. After all, the purpose of that coat stand is to be covered with coats. So, when you shop for one, while you keep the looks, the craftsmanship and materials in mind, also keep in mind the load it will have to bear.
Depending upon where you live, coat stands or racks may only serve for four months a year or, if you live in those chillier regions, they could be in “full service” for ten out of twelve. Of course, even in warm weather, there are raincoats, hats and jackets to consider. All in all, strength and ease of use are the two biggest factors to weigh when choosing the right stand for your entryway.
I personally enjoy a wall rack or a coat stand that is meant to butt up against a wall or tuck into a corner. Those coat “trees” (my name for them) that stand out in the middle of the foyer like a sapling waiting to be blown over by a breeze are just a bit too top heavy when fully loaded for my taste. Fortunately, there are plenty of styles of coat stands for us to choose from. Just be sure it is well constructed and sturdy, so it can bear up under the weight of four parkas, two hooded sweatshirts a couple of mufflers and a funny looking ski cap with a dingle-ball on the top. If it can handle that and your five year old can hang up her own earmuffs, then it is definitely a keeper.
So, choose your coat stands wisely and chances are they will stand for many years to come, providing you a place to hang your hat and whatever else comes with it.
