De-Odorizing Shoe Cabinets: 3 Simple Ways That Work

Storing all of you shoes in a cabinet rather than scattering them all over the hallway has plenty of benefits and just one disadvantage any runner will understand. Sometimes, keeping your shoes in a poorly ventilated cabinet creates an unpleasant smell — especially after a run or a training in a gym. Sure, going with open shoe racks  might alleviate the problem, just as finding means to better ventilate the cabinet. However, even this is not always enough, and quite often de-odorizing shoe cabinets is the only means left. And here are several different suggestions that might help you cope with the task in the most efficient manner:

Ready made deodorisers

Probably, one of the easiest approaches to de-odorizing shoe cabinets is to get some ready made deodorizers. Most of them feature charcoal base, while some others also come with aroma supplements. You just have to leave the deodoriser in your cabinet and change it once in a while. The frequency will depend on the smell, but on the whole once a month is usually enough. Also, you might want do clean and properly ventilate your cabinet before you stuff it with deodorizers. Any soaps and detergents are generally enough — just  make sure to let the cabinet dry. Wipe it dry and leave the doors open for at least a couple of hours.

Domestic means

A more affordable way is to use baking soda instead of any deodorizers. Soda does not have any distinct smell of its own, but it is incredibly good at absorbing all other smells, even shoe stink. The approach is almost the same — first, you clean the cabinet and let it ventilate, then you stuff it with soda. You can use any small bowl, a part of a plastic bottle, or even a simple sock, stiffed with baking soda.

When it comes to cleaning, you can also use vinegar for de-odorizing shoe cabinets . They can be even more effective than soaps, and even though vinegar is a bit smelly all on itself, this smell will go away when the shelves are dry. If you add a couple of lemon juice drops, the vinegar will have nicer smell, too. To clean wooden shelves, you can use a 1:1 mixture of vinegar and olive oil. For an even nicer smell, add a couple of scented oil drops — tea, rose, or any other scent you have in mind.

Straight to the source

Yet, one of the best approaches is to always go straight to the source — that is, try to get rid of the smell in your shoes. First of all, define which pair(s) is causing the problem. Then, there will be a couple of possible solutions. First, you can use the same soda filled sock to stuff you shoes. Going with deodorising insoles as you exercise is another idea that might work. Also, you can stuff your smelly shoes with a newspaper. Letting them air dry before putting a pair into the cabinet can also be very effective.
