How To Achieve Sherlock-Inspired Home Decor

With one of the most popular TV shows back on our TV screens again. We here at Furniture in Fashion thought we’d take some time out to come up with a few ideas for transforming your home decor. And giving it a bit of a Sherlock-inspired makeover this year.

Sherlock itself is a fantastic crime drama TV series based on the famous books. The books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Mark Gatiss. It first aired in 2010 and the latest three episodes have just aired on the BBC (although this season doesn’t appear to have been quite as well received as previous ones). It’s won all sorts of Emmy Awards and has been critically acclaimed by all sorts. Including the Independent, which wrote: “Sherlock is a triumph, witty and knowing, without ever undercutting the flair and dazzle of the original. It understands that Holmes isn’t really about plot but about charisma. Flagrantly unfaithful to the original in some respects, Sherlock is wonderfully loyal to it in every way that matters.”

If you’re as taken with the show as we are, it might well have crossed your mind to try and bring some of the aesthetics of the show into your own house. Whether that’s with glass coffee tables or something else. You can get all sorts of great ideas for interior design from watching your favourite TV programmes. The good news about Sherlock is that the stylists have done a brilliant job so there’s an awful lot of inspiration to be found here.

For example, you can’t get away from the big and bold wallpaper. That adorns the walls of the Baker Street flat where Sherlock and Watson live. Even better news is that statement wallpaper is going to be a big trend for 2017. So you’ll be able to give a nod to one of your favourite shows while staying on trend at the same time. Look out for slightly more rustic prints in monochrome to get the Sherlock look bang on. Offset the dark paper with some standing lamps in silver to really showcase the wallpaper but also keep your room relatively light.

Another good idea would be to add window valance boxes over your curtains. A very Art Deco idea that Sherlock has in his apartment. They’re very easy to make yourself and should only take a few pieces of MDF to create. Once the box has been made, either paint it or cover it in fabric to match your curtains. Then put it in place over the top of your curtains. It not only looks luxurious and unique, but it also serves to hide the ruffles of your curtains at the top which can be unsightly.

There are other Art Deco flourishes to be found in the flat as well. Such as Sherlock’s big mirror that hangs over his fireplace. His is square but you could find a beautiful Art Deco version. Perhaps hang it in the hall over a hallway table instead of a fireplace if you don’t have one of those.

As for home furnishings, look out for big comfy armchairs in either leather or a plaid print. Plaid, by the way, is likely to be big news this year as well. So that you have somewhere comfy to sit, and then bring in a few Britain-inspired cushions, rug and throws to complete the look. You might not want to go all out with the Union Jack. But you could use heritage colours like dark greens, browns and purples to evoke a sense of true Britishness in your home.
