Redecorating the house can be a lot of fun but it can also be a bit of a nuisance, especially when something goes wrong. How many of you have succeeded in kicking tins of white paint all over your home furniture while trying to give the living room a new coat of paint? The horror of it all!
But what if we told you that there was a way you could bypass all that horrible painting altogether? That’s right, we’re talking about digital wallpaper, something that you’re sure to have already come across in hotels, bars and restaurants but which we predict will become big news for homeowners in the years ahead.
With smart technology, artificial intelligence and the home are already well married up. We’re sure you know at least one family that has a Wifi lock on their front door or central heating that can be controlled from their smartphone. Digital wallpaper takes this idea and really runs with it, allowing you to redecorate in seconds rather than hours (and at a fraction of the cost as well). Simply have digital panels installed on your walls and then use technology to control your own environment, deciding on what wall coverings you’d prefer. You could change it on a daily basis if that’s what your heart desires!
Of course, you probably won’t want to have every wall in your home covered in digital wallpaper but if accent walls are your thing then why not give this a go? If you’ve got a games room or a second reception room, it could work well as an experiment in there. The kids are sure to love it, at any rate – and you could even have your favourite family photos showcased for everyone’s amusement from time to time.
If you’re not taken with this idea, then don’t worry – wallpaper itself will never actually go out of fashion. Going bold is going to be a key trend for wallpaper in 2017 so look out for big dramatic prints with the likes of botanical sketches and trees, flowers, insects, leaves, shells and minerals, all of which are going to be seen increasingly in homes around the world over the next 12 months.
Trick wallpapers are also going to be pretty popular next year and might well be the stepping stone you need to consider bringing in a digital wall as well. Designs that trick the eye are known as trompe l’oeil, so look out for papers that make your walls look like they’re made from concrete or timber, or perhaps something like period ceramic tiles. Given that actual tiles will most likely be prohibitively expensive, wallpaper’s a great way of shortcutting and getting the look without having to shell out the big bucks.
