Let’s admit it, few people can afford a truly big bedroom these days. Most bedrooms are small, which means they can hardly accommodate a bed, a bedside cabinet , a small wardrobe and a TV, to say nothing of some extra items, such as, for example a vanity table. Furnishing a small bedroom may be a tricky task, still, it`s possible to find an attractive, stylish and functional solution. All you have to do is stick to these plain and simple rules:
Use lighter shades
Before you start furnishing your small bedroom, pay special attention to its color scheme. Use wallpaper or wall paint of lighter and brighter hues – this will make the room appear visually more spacious and expanded. The same goes for furniture: regardless of which material you choose – solid wood, acryl or quality MDF board, avoid choosing darker hues, such as black or dark brown. In some cases, however, you may want to add a dark element to your bright interior to create ambience or to introduce an interesting focal point (for example, a black TV-stand would spruce up a white contemporary bedroom). Another important tip: use wallpaper with horizontal lines to visually broaden the available space. It is also recommended to paint the ceiling of your small bedroom in plain pure white. As for the floor, if you lay your parquet or laminate in diagonal direction, this will also help gain some of the perceived space.
Choose appropriate furniture
Unfair as it may seem, not all furniture styles will suit a small bedroom. Classic or vintage furniture with lots of decorative details and elaborate carvings tends to overload space and is more suitable for bigger premises. If you want to save at least some of the precious space for yourself, use simple furniture with smooth straight lines and little decorations. Sleek contemporary furniture is perfect for small bedrooms. If you find hi-tech designs too cold and unwelcoming, you may want to go for cozy Scandinavian style furniture in taupe of light brown hues.
The most significant furniture item of any bedroom is, surely, a bed. To use space efficiently, get a bed with no legs, ideally, the one that includes a big storage box underneath for keeping linen or other utensils. If you use your bedroom as a home office, you may want to consider getting a sofa-bed, which can easily be folded during the day to provide you with more space for your activities.
An in-built wardrobe is arguably an ideal solution for a small cozy bedroom. You may want to use the same color as your bedroom walls for its doors, to ensure its seamless integration into the interior. Mirrored wardrobe walls are another smart space-saving solution, as mirrors create the desired added-space effect.
Choose proper décor items and accessories
The main tip here is – don’t go overboard with accessories. You don`t want to make you room too plain or minimalistic either, and we wouldn`t advise you to refrain from using décor elements altogether, just be aware that too many of them will create unnecessary clutter.
If you are looking for more inspiration and ideas, try browsing online stores. Big and reputable retail chains usually offer impressive product range to help you furnish your small bedroom from scratch. Needless to say, their pricing policy is usually quite reasonable as well and you can easily find quality items for a bargain price there.
