Latest Trends in Bedroom Furniture for Children

Perhaps the latest trend in furniture for children is modular furniture which, besides being space efficient, is easy to transform into new and different arrangements. Modular furniture maximizes storage potential, and makes furniture arrangement projects an endeavor that is more fun than strictly a chore.
Big and bulky, oak wood furniture is becoming less common, and is being replaced by different, less heavy materials, as well as materials that are easier to clean and less likely to be nicked or scratched.

The lighter materials make the furniture easier for children to rearrange in their own rooms in new and interesting ways. Complementary furniture trends include the use of storage space pieces that tuck nicely into a closet or into a corner, as opposed to the big, bulky desks and bureaus of previous generations. By making more efficient use of space in out-of-the-way places, such as closets, the available space in the central portion of the room is made wider and freer of furniture. As nice as furniture may look in a room, the part of the room that children appreciate the most would be the open space in which to move around.

Together with the trend to utilize materials other than wood, furniture for children has become more “fun,” taking on different shapes and features that would have been much more difficult to construct with wood. Wood was too thick and veneer too flimsy to create the shapes of castles, dollhouses, and so forth. More flexible materials, which are for example less prone to water damage and more robust items, are more suited to the lively and carefree nature of children who are just as likely to turn a chair into a fort as to sit on it. Furniture for children has become, over time, more suited to their particular needs, rather than simply being smaller versions of the furniture that adults would use. There are now desks for children that have spaces specifically designed for using and storing electronic devices such as laptops or media players. They come complete with easy access for cords to run out of the back in cord channels rather than being untidily draped in front of the desk and down to an electrical outlet.

Another trend in furniture for children is to design items to be “upgradeable.” This is particularly true of modular varieties of furniture. As the child grows and finds a greater need for organization, or accumulates more possessions that need to be stored in certain places, modular pieces can be added, subtracted, rearranged, and the overall shape of the furniture transformed.

In conclusion, the advent of new and alternative materials for use in furniture construction has resulted in the designs and types of furniture for children  becoming much more diverse, with more choices available for children, according to THEIR tastes. Furniture has become more customizable for the needs of children, and not just for the tastes and needs of adults. This makes a child’s room much more user-friendly, and therefore it becomes a much more enjoyable place.
