How you furnish your office can influence how much work you get done in a day. These days more “work” is done sitting at a desk than was once done in an assembly line. Since the advent of the computer and its being whittled down to personal size, the “job” market has been forever altered. More “workers” in a company are desk sitting all day long. So, it only stands to reason that the home office furniture they use will influence on their level of productivity. A desk used to be large, cumbersome and meant to hold a typewriter. (Remember those?). It had drawers for things like pencils, staplers and staples, tape dispensers, steno-pads, etc. Today’s desk is a totally different piece kind of furniture. It is mean to provide a place for the worker’s computer. It has to have a spot for the processor, monitor, keyboard, mouse and the other peripheral equipment. Ideally it will have at least a single drawer for things like CDs, pens and maybe a pack of gum.
Instead of large metal file cabinets that lined entire walls, most of today’s offices have smaller ones. These hold fewer and fewer paper files. With so many companies going “paperless”, there is less to file away in the real world and more virtual filing. The file cabinet, like so many other old standby pieces of office furniture, is fast becoming a dinosaur in the workplace.
Providing employees with desks that hold their PCs and peripherals, a chair that allows them to spend hours typing on a keyboard and reading a monitor (not to mention moving a mouse) in relative comfort are both necessary to that employee getting their tasks accomplished. Office furniture has evolved as the way we work has changed. Today’s office furnishings are a big part of the essential tool set needed to get business done.
