Furnishing those little spaces which enterprising realtors term “studio apartments” requires creativity as well as a bit of interior design prestidigitation. Abracadabra! A wave of the decorative wand and you are able to live comfortably in less space than a one-car garage. Fortunately, good studio apartment furniture can provide all of the magical ingredients you require to pull off the transformation.
Other than the toilet, no piece of furniture in a studio apartment is allowed to have a just one single purpose. I don’t know if this is written anywhere as a rule, but it is certainly a truth that any person who has ever lived in a studio will vouch for. In fact, if you’re creative enough, then you can probably find a few additional uses for the toilet, too. Hey, don’t discount the back of the tank as a makeshift bookshelf. Better yet, buy one of those over-the-toilet style storage racks. It can hold towels, soaps and shampoos and you’ll still have the back of the tank for your budding library.
Other great space-saving pieces of studio apartment furniture abound. A list of these might include foldout sofas or futons that are both bed and couch. Next you might find one of my favorites, the ottoman/coffee table/storage trunk that can also fill in as a chair! The kitchen can have a microwave cart with cabinets that hold a toaster, breadbox and, of course, your espresso machine. And the list goes on and on.
In short, the sort of furniture that works in a studio apartment really works… hard. It has to do a lot of things well, and look nice as it does. Fortunately, human ingenuity is constantly adding to the list of great multi-function furniture items, and will continue to do so as long as there are studio apartments.
