A side table can sit by the “side” of a bed, a couch, a chair or, I suppose, even the fridge. When you are using a table next to another piece of furniture, it needs to be a good neighbor. Often, I find that tables situated on four legs tend to make the space next to a fine sofa or an elegant chair look cluttered and full. A good pedestal side table , however, sits gracefully upon a single elegant column and can prove to be quite a good neighbor indeed.
The idea of putting tables on a pedestal is ancient. Some of my favorites are from the Greek Revival School of furniture . Today, modern designers are taking up the tune of this old song and creating sweet new melodies. With today’s modern materials and artistic focus, some of the types of pedestal side table are bound to become instant classics.
The pedestal and the tabletop, in this sort of table, don’t have to be of the same material. They do, however, need to “marry well”. Some of the modern tables have metal columns supporting faux marble tops or metal tabletops that enclose a sheet of thick glass. Old school pedestal tables are usually wooden. The columns are fluted and can resemble those from an ancient Greek temple. The tops can be round or square or drop-leafed so that they can open up to create a larger table surface. Each style has its own merits, but all of them do one thing very well. They eliminate the clutter of too many legs on too many tables in a small room .
So, if you’re looking for a good “neighbor” for you sofa or chair, why not choose a classic looking side table on a pedestal? The single column supports the top beautifully, and you only have one leg to worry about.
